Desalination plants

Desalination plants

Desalination is the process of removing the saline part from an aqueous solution. In our field, we refer above all to the removal of salt from marine waters in order to make them suitable for human or industrial use.

To date, with the water emergency advancing in the world, the desalination of seawater acquires more and more importance and importance.

The main technology used is reverse osmosis. The typical scheme of a desalination plant consists of:

  • Collection of marine waters
  • Relaunch of the treatment
  • Filtration on quartzite
  • Microfiltration 20 µ + 5 µ
  • Chemical conditioning
  • High pressure electric pumps (≃ 60-70 bar) + energy recovery system
  • Specially made osmotic membrane trains suitable for sea water

The permeate can be accumulated and made available for other treatments or for relaunching services, while the concentrate, except in special cases, is generally delivered to the sea.

Over the years, this technology has undergone considerable maturation, managing to achieve better and better performance by reducing energy use. The main developments concern the creation of increasingly performing membranes (equal production and saline rejection with a lower operating pressure) and the efficiency of high pressure systems through the use of inverters and energy recuperators that allow the pressurization of the water. of food through a transfer of energy from the waste (concentrate).
